Barsana, 2019.03.16 (VT): Barsana’s famed Laddu and Lathmaar Holis were played on March 14 and 15 this year. In Ladliji Temple, Shri Radha and Krishna were brought out of the ‘garbhagriha’ to give darshan to their devotees from the ‘sheeshmahal’. A ‘phool bangla’ was also designed for the occasion.
On March 14, ‘Panda lila’ and Laddu Holi were played in Radharani Mahal (Barsana) and Nandbhavan (Nandgaon). Shri Radha’s sakhis went to Nandgaon to invite Krishna and his friends for Holi in Barsana. The invitation was delivered along with ‘Gulal’, Paan (betel leaves), and Ittr (perfumed oil).
The Sakhis became ecstatic on hearing this. They offered ‘Laddus’ to the ‘panda’ who ate some, and threw the rest at the people out of sheer joy, thus beginning the playful ‘Laddu Holi’.
Next morning (March 15), after doing Parikrama, devotees gathered in huge numbers at Ladliji Temple. Men from Nandgaon assembled at the Sanket Radha Raman Temple by afternoon. From there, they proceeded for Priya Kund where ‘Barsanawasis’ gave them a grand reception. After taking some refreshments, they tied their turbans and oiled their ‘Dhaal’ (shields) in preparation for the Lathmaar Holi.
Thereafter, ‘samaj and Holi gayan’ was held at Ladliji Temple where Goswamis from Barsana and Nandgaon sang traditional Holi songs while taking digs at each other. The final destination of this crowd was ‘Rangili Gali’ where scores of women awaited them with ‘Lathis’ (sticks) in their hands!
